I have enjoyed many conversations with constituents over the last few years. Yes, we have a very beautiful and historic city, which I am struggling to maintain this significant heritage. However, due to the age of this city it is now facing an important time where we need to upgrade and improve many facilities, processes and especially our water system. Some of our current water system is nearly 100 years old, perhaps more. Because of this there is much that needs to be UPDATED, without destroying our historical preciousness.
The causes of the present water issues are many, including iron present in the ground water, and iron coming from old and corroded steel pipes. Currently we have a water “flushing” program to address this concern. The discoloration issue arises due to water sitting and corroding the steel pipes. We are trying to “flush” or move it around but want to do so without being water wasteful and without damaging our fragile pipes.
As for the nitrate issues, those have been resolved within the city. We now have new wells that mitigate this issue and give us the state authorized “redundancy” we need to function without this health hazard. At a county level I will attempt to address this issue in the agricultural sectors so that nitrates are not overused and encroaching on city water systems. I can also help direct the San Benito County Water Board to concentrate more effort toward San Juan Bautista and its preservation as a county gem.
I have been very proactive in addressing the on-going and future issues of water mitigation. As past president of the local Water Resources Board, I am still active in procuring pristine water resources for our county. I have done much research and study into the connection of the water coming from the West Hills Water Treatment Plant, which is about 5 miles away. The pipeline that currently comes through town and goes out to Anzar High School is untreated surface water from the California Aqueduct system, and not potable. We are looking into infrastructure grants and low interest loans to address this possibility. As a county supervisor I will still be working on this issue from a more regional perspective.
